  • The spread of Jatropha plant cultivation in Egypt symposium

On Tuesday 27, Sep 2016, The General Administration for Community Services and Environmental Development in cooperation with the Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Research, organized a symposium entitled “The spread of Jatropha plant cultivation in Egypt” under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Essam Metwaly – the Acting President of the University.

The symposium lectured by Prof. Dr. Adel Hegazy – Biotechnology Professor at the Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Research and the Director of the University Projects. Dr. Hegazy explained the Jatropha plant and its uses as natural alternative energy in the future “Jatropha grows in tropical and sub-tropical regions, with cultivation limits at 30ºN and 35ºS. It also grows in lower altitudes of 0-500 meters above sea level. Jatropha is not sensitive to day length (flowering is independent of latitude) and may flower at any time of the year. It is a succulent shrub that sheds its leaves during the dry season, with deep roots that make it well suited to semi-arid conditions. While jatropha can survive with as little as 250 to 300 mm of annual rainfall, at least 600 mm is needed to flower and set fruit. The optimum rainfall for seed production is considered between 1 000 and 1 500 mm, which corresponds to sub humid ecologies. While jatropha has been observed growing with 3 000 mm of rainfall, higher precipitation is likely to cause fungal attack and restrict root growth in all but the most free-draining soils.

The best soils for jatropha are aerated sands and loams of at least 45 cm depth. Heavy clay soils are less suitable and should be avoided, particularly where drainage is impaired, as jatropha is intolerant of waterlogged conditions. Ability to grow in alkaline soils has been widely reported, but the soil pH should be within 6.0 to 8.0/8.5. There is evidence from northwest India that jatropha is tolerant of saline irrigation water, although yield under these conditions is not documented. Jatropha is known for its ability to survive in very poor, dry soils in conditions considered marginal for agriculture, and can even root into rock crevices. However, the survival ability does not mean that high productivity can be obtained from jatropha under marginal agricultural environments.

The oil content of jatropha seed can range from 18.4–42.3 percent but generally lies in the range of 30–35 percent. The oil is almost all stored in the seed kernel, which has an oil content of around 50–55 percent. This compares well to groundnut kernel (42 percent), rape seed (37 percent), soybean seed (14 percent) and sunflower seed (32 percent). The seed kernel contains predominantly crude fat (oil) and protein, while the seed coat contains mainly fiber. The products of the harvested jatropha fruits and their fractions by weight. The fruit shell describes the fruit pericarp, while the seed consists of the inner kernel and the outer husk or seed coat.

Jatropha also will be used as “Oil Crop - Raw material - Medicinal plant - Raw material for dye - Soil enrichment - Feed - Insecticide/ pesticide - Alternative to Diesel”.

While, Dr. Metwaly pointed out that, the University of Sadat City is moving to support such projects by providing land and support needed and held a joint agreements with the Japanese side to finance projects in this field, which will come back to the university and Egypt with positive in energy and economic fields.

The Symposium attended by several academic and governmental leaders, Eng. Mamdouh Ashour – Chairman of Sadat City Development Authority, Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Emam Nasr – Former Dean of the Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Research and the Founder of the Institute, Prof. Dr. Amal Abd El-Aziz – Dean of the Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Research and Prof. Dr. Mubarak Hasani - Dean of the Institute of Environmental Studies and Research.

For a person with a mental disorder, dietary change may be needed to promote healthier eating, to adopt a therapeutic diet, or to avoid nutrient-drug interactions. Nutrition counseling is an integral part of treatment for persons with eating disorders or chemical dependencies. Persons taking certain drugs, such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors, used to treat depression and anxiety disorders, need to follow a tyramine-controlled diet to avoid dietary interference with their medication. Many drugs used to treat mental disorders can cause weight gain or loss, so persons taking these medications may also benefit from .nutrition counseling.

The nutrition counselor and individual work together to assess current eating patterns and identify areas where change is needed. Registered nutrient have met certain education and experience standards and are well qualified to provide nutrition counseling, but nurses, physicians, and health educators also provide nutrition counseling.
